Two Months Ago I Noticed My Left Ankle Was Suddenly

default
Posted on Tue, 19 Jan 2021
Question: Two months ago I noticed my left ankle was suddenly badly swollen. My primary suggested RICE. It goes down overnight, but the swelling is twice as bad now, including the foot and up to the knee, with the leg turning purple at times. It has also moved to my right ankle, but not as severe. A return to my primary resulted in x-rays, which were negative. I am being advised to RICE and come back in four months. It didn't hurt at first, but now it's very painful and I am limping badly with a stiff ankle. I am mystified. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Arthritis/ synovitis or venous causes

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history, medicines and photo and understood the concerns.
The possibilities I can think about with available information are as follows:
- Pain, stiffness and edema in ankle joint is indicative of joint inflammation/ arthritis.
- Synovitis of ankle joint.
- Turning purple at times can indicate towards venous cause.
- Some medicines can cause ankle edema.
- Something like gluten allergy also can cause such problems.

Please discuss these points with your Doctor and request/insist for color doppler for venous system and MRI of the ankle joint.
Avoid or reduce gluten containing foods.
Continue RICE.

I hope this answer helps you.
