Answered by Dr. Muhammed Aslam TK (6 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Need few more details

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
I have gone through your query and understand your concern

This suggests acute gastroenteritis
For getting a more clear picture, I would like to get few more details:

1. His body weight?
2. When did this start?
3. Does the stools contains blood/mucus?
4. Any vomiting, abdominal pain or pain on passing stools?
5. Any other complaints like cold or cough?
6. Is he otherwise active and taking feeds?
7. Anyone else in the family having similar issue now?

Kindly get back with details, so that I can guide you better

Meanwhile, give him Paracetamol suspension(250mg/5ml) 3ml to control fever 3-4 times daily. Also, give frequent sips of fluids like ORS solution or salted rice water- around 100ml after each stools to prevent dehydration. Avoid giving fruits/juices/sugaries, as these will worsen diarrhea

Brief Answer:
Suggests dysentery

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for the details given

Bloody/mucoid stools along with fever and abdominal pain suggests dysentery, and needs antibiotics along with other supportive measures.

You can continue Paracetamol and fluids as suggested before.
Along with this, you also give him the following medicines:

1. Zinc: Z&D drops(20mg/ml) 1ml once daily for 2 weeks
2. Probiotic: Enterogermina oral suspension, 1 vial once daily for 5 days(give 2 hours after antibiotics)
3. Antibiotic: I used to give cefixime as the first line- For his weight, Cefixime dry syrup(50mg/5ml) 5ml twice daily for 5-7 days would be enough. But, this is a PRESCRIPTION DRUG, and needs an XXXXXXX prescription as per law.

With these measures, he should be fine in 3 days, but we have to complete the treatment course as mentioned.
Take him to nearby hospital/pediatrician without further delay if he develops following danger signs:

1. Too tired to be in bed always
2. Not at all taking feeds/fluids(some anorexia is common and increased frequency of feeds should
compensate)
3. Signs of dehydration- sunken eyes, dry mouth, no tear while crying, very little urine output.

If you need further clarification, I will be happy to help\
Wishing for a faster cure

Brief Answer:
No need to wait

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
Happy to hear that he is fine now.

You can put him on his normal diet including milk. There can be a decrease in appetite for a couple of days, so you can increase the frequency of feeds to compensate

If no loose stools, can give fruits as well.

I hope this answer will help
If you need further clarification, I will be happy to help; otherwise you can close the discussion and kindly rate the answer.

He has started coughing a lot. Seems like cold cough due to liquid diet given. Please suggest medicine for cold cough.

Answered by Dr. Muhammed Aslam TK (1 hour later)
Brief Answer:
Give symptomatic treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,

If there is no fever or breathing difficulty, we need not worry.

You can give him a bronchodilator(salbutamol) and an antihistaminic(Levocetirizine).
Give Salbutamol syrup(2mg/5ml) 5ml 3 times daily and 3ml of Levocetirizine syrup(2.5mg/5ml) at night. Continue this for 5 days.

If not getting better by 3-5 days or if he develops fever/breathing difficulty, kindly get back to me. Otherwise we need not worry

Also, I hope there was no COVID +ve case in family or neighbours recently. Loose stools followed by cough can be symptoms of COVID, but as there is no fever and she is active otherwise, nothing to worry- she will be alright in few days.

I hope this answer will help

Brief Answer:
That is fine

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Happy to know that he is negative for COVID,

Then this is probably a viral infection and we need not worry. Just continue the medicines as suggested and let me know the status after 5 days

Wishing for a faster cure
Take care
