Question: WelcomI e to 'Ask a Doctor'. Please type your question here.. I recently had 2 stents put in to drain urine from my kidneys which both have a kidney stone. I am also taking Bactrim for a urinary tract infection. The urologist said he would remove the stones in 2 weeks. My question is why do I have to wait for the procedure to remove the stones?

Brief Answer:
Surgery is a major intervention and may need planning- the doctor has already treated urgent things such as providing passage for the urine and treating infections

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to 'Ask a Doctor' service,

I carefully read your query.

Stents in the ureters are commonly used to allow the urine to pass from the kidneys to the bladder when there is a blockage. In your case, very likely due to the kidney stones blocking this passage the doctor has put the stents.

The doctor has a lot more information available (history, examination, and test results) that may clearly indicate why he plans to have the surgery in two weeks but I would like to reassure you that the stents can be kept in place from a few days to a few months.

So, it is safe to put the stents and have the surgery in a few weeks. This may be also due to the need for planning. Every surgery that is not urgent needs to be planned. Also, these two weeks are a good timeframe for the infection to be completely treated as well.

So, the doctor seems to be treating urgent things (providing a passage for the urine and giving antibiotics to treat or prevent infections) and is in the process of planning a long term treatment (the surgery) which is normally a major intervention and needs proper planning.

Meanwhile, your body is recovering from the urinary infection and is getting ready for the surgery.

I hope this is helpful.
I remain at your disposal for further medical assistance.
