Wha Causes Sudden Inflammation And Pain In Toe?

Question: I have one toe (next to little toe) on right foot that suddenly is causing me pain. It is red but not swollen. It is a throbbing pain. It woke me up in the night. Do not know what I did to cause this. Took Tylenol Arthritis. Still is very painful. Have it elevated. What should I do??
Brief Answer:
Paronychia - an infection in the toe
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
thanks for your question.
The symptoms you describe are consistent with an infection in the toe. This would most commonly be around the nail bed area.
The treatment for paronychia (an infection around the nail) is sometimes incisiona and drainage if there is a collection of pus or simply antibiotic medication.
I hope this helps answer your question.
best wishes
