What Are Fever, Laryngitis Followed By Persistent Sore Throat Indicative Of?
Question: Hello,
I've had a sore throat for 13-14 days without any cold symptoms except a few days of fever and total laryngitis. The pain continues where my tonsils used to be (had a tonsillectomy at the age of 6 yr.). Cepacol does little to ease the sore throat. I can't remember ever having a sore throat lasting this long. What might be the cause and what is your recommendation? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Possible Pharyngitis
Detailed Answer:
Hello Ma'am
I can certainly understand your concern
I have worked through your attached query in detail
As per your symptoms you possibly seem to have Upper respiratory tract infection possibly Acute Pharyngitis.
This is not tonsillitis as suggested by your doctor.
This Infection requires a short course of oral antibiotics.
I generally prescribe oral medications of Amoxicillin-Clavulanate 625mg twice daily for 5 days to my patients with such symptoms.
Please check with your physician if he shares my view and if can prescribe these medications to improve your symptoms.
Post your further queries if any

I appreciate your response. My follow-up question: When I went to the clinic, the physician indicated that antibiotics won't help if the sore throat was caused by a virus...only if caused by a bacteria. So, how can I as a patient address this with a physician---to give antibiotics a chance to take care of the problem? Thank you!
Brief Answer:
Culture and sensitivity testing will help.
Detailed Answer:
Hello Sir
I can certainly understand your concern.
Viral Infection is usually short lasting and is of milder severity. Additionally almost all viral Infections are accompanied by secondary bacterial infection.
Hence there is a need for considering oral antibiotics.
In case of any ambiguity, it's advisable to consider culture and sensitivity of throat sample/specimen which can identify the bacteria if any and indicate the appropriate antibiotics based on sensitivity testing.
