Brief Answer:
Usually benign cysts of ovary.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
Normally ovaries are solid structures containing plenty of follicles which mature to release ovum. Sometimes in some people due to multiple reasons, the solid ovaries are studded with cysts. Such a condition is referred to as 'polycystic ovaries'.
Single or two cysts see in a single ovary are usually functional cysts. Functional cysts appear and grow in size with the hormonal changes that occur during the normal cycle and these cysts regress on their own after normal periods. These do not pose any problem in ovulation or conception. To regress such cysts, cyclic oral contraceptive pills are also prescribed sometimes.
Neoplastic cysts arise by inappropriate overgrowth of cells within the ovary and may be malignant or benign.
Endometriomas are cysts filled with altered blood arising from ectopic endometrium.
Haemorrhagic cysts and dermoid cysts are other common benign cysts.
Ovarian cysts are found on transvaginal ultrasound in nearly all premenopausal women and in up to 14.8% of postmenopausal women. The majority of these cysts are functional in nature and benign.
Follow up scans are needed to see their progress.
