Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you for asking!
I read your query and understood your concerns.
Liver cirrhosis has four stages according to biopsy findings that are as follow:
• Stage 1 has the presence of inflammation and a bit growth of connective tissue around the portal area. This is the area where blood and fluid flow into and out of the liver.
• Stage 2 is characterized with inflammation and fibrotic tissue.
• Stage 3.At this stage the damage of the liver is more sever. The fibrotic tissue forms bridges. These fibrotic bridges increase the blood pressure in the liver and cause liver damage.
• Stage 4. At this point the growth of fibrotic (scar) tissue has progressed and the liver is not functioning normally. The symptoms are as follow: GI bleeding, edema, jaundice, and encephalopathy.
Please keep in mind that in clinical practice it is in use Child-Turcotte-Pugh Scoring System to predict life expectancy in patients with advanced cirrhosis.
Hope this was of help!

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,
If the patient quit drinking at the stage three of liver cirrhosis, this will stop further liver damage. This is of help because at this stage the patient is still in compensated liver failure and stopping alcohol will help to remain in that stage.
Moreover in very rare cases there is seen a regression of liver damages, but this is more an exception than a general rule.
