Posted on Mon, 3 Aug 2015
Question: Hi Doctor,

This is a correction email. I had consumed levofloxacin 500 mg twice a day and continued to have the same for 5 days. I was 5 - 6 weeks pregnant then . My double test report taken in the 13th week is negative . I would like to know whether my baby is prone to have autism or other birth defects. Please advice the list of prenatal tests to be taken to ensure that everything would be fine with the baby ?

Brief Answer:
Nuchal translucency and blood test

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to Healthcare Magic.
I am Dr Ramadevi Wani. I will be answering your concerns today.

Levofloxacin is classified as category C drug by FDA. Studies in immature animals have shown defect in cartilage and bone formation with Levofloxacin. However studies in humans so far have not shown increased risk of congenital anomalies.
With double test I presume you have done blood test.
It is best to get combined test done.
Combined test involves measuring nuchal translucency by ultrasound ( measures fluid collection in the subcutaneous tissue at the nape of the neck between 11-14 weeks pregnancy ) and a blood test for PAPP-A and HCG.
A good Sonologist can do a anomaly scan at 13 weeks pregnancy.

There are no available prenatal tests to predict autism in a child.
eat healthy. Stay Healthy. Avoid any sort of infection as much as possible.
I hope this helps.
If you have further concerns, I will be happy to answer.
