What Are The Chances Of HIV Transmission Through Protected Sex?

default
Posted on Thu, 29 Jan 2015
Question: Hi,
I recently got back from the Dominican Republic and have been worried since. while I was down there, I had sex with multiple women. These women were local and were paid workers. I used a condom each time for all vaginal intercourse, however three of them had given me oral sex without the condom being on. I was diagnosed with HSV2 a couple of months ago, which I picked up from my long-term ex girlfriend. I have never been promiscuous in my life and this vacation was a first. I had, in fact only been with 5 women prior in my 32 years of life. The first day I got there, I felt an outbreak coming on and soon after I had a few very small blisters near the head of my penis, but on the shaft ( my normal outbreak location) This was before I had any sex or contact with the women down there. With these sores present, I then recieved the oral sex from the women. This was poor judgment, I know, but I was in a new place and had been drinking a bit. I did tell the girls about my condition, as I would never intentionally put anyone at risk, even a sex worker. I know statistically, they likely had hsv themselves, and they didnt seem bothered by it. Things were just moving very fast and I wasn't thinking smart. The sores have since healed at their normal rate in only a matter of days. I am now back in the US and am worried sick that I may have picked something up, despite these girls being from a reputed place, where they recieve monthly health checks including hiv tests. I feel fine physically, but mentally I am nervous and scared. I could really use some advice and expertise. I should also mention that the girls had no visual sores of cuts on or in their mouths, and the sores I had on my penis were very small and it was a minor hsv outbreak, which overall lasted about a week. please help! Thank you.

Brief Answer:
HIV transmission rare .Get tested for HIV.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thank you for query. I am Dr Bharatesh D Basti answering your query.

I have gone through the description. I can make out reason for your anxiety.
As you had protected intercourse the chances of transmission of HIV is nil.
Transmission of HIV is very rare through the oral route. It is slightly higher if there are open wounds in either of them.
It is good that they are repeatedly tested negative.

There is a minor possibility to consider this as risk case due to following reasons: you had ongoing herpes infection, and partners being high risk partners.

You may get tested for HIV to relieve your anxiety, depending on time since exposure.

You can get back for any clarification.
Thank you
