default
Posted on Sat, 10 Sep 2016
Question: HI Doc

About 15 days ago I had sex with a sex worker. I had protected oral and protected vaginal but do not know if there was any leak did not check properly. I also performed rimming on her unprotected. After 4 days I started of with sore throat then about a week after I had a swollen neck it is still very stiff. I an really scarred. I booked a hiv duo test for 26th day. When do usually symptoms occur.

Thanks

Brief Answer:
HIV unlikely.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thank you for query I am Dr Bharatesh D Basti answering your query.
Welcome to health care magic.
I have gone through the details.

The chances of transmission of HIV by protected intercourse and oral sex is nil. The chances by rimming is also nil unless there are bleeding wounds in both in the areas of contact. It is very unlikely.
HIV Duo test is negative is a good sign.

The symptoms are non specific and can be due to any simple respiratory infection due to contact with the person. Early HIV symptoms occur after 1-3 weeks but are not specific. HIV is confirmed by tests.

You can go for HIV 1&2 RNA PCR test now.

You can get back for any clarification.
Thank you

Thanks for your reply doctor. I did not check her anal are properly for any cuts. I had sex in the evening on that day but I do bleed gums while brushing and also have longterm chest infection which comes on and off. Is this going to be any risk and also here in Sydney Australia they do not offer pcr rna for hiv but they say it is conclusive for 6 week with hiv duo test. It is 15 days now if I do not have any symptoms can I be sure that I do not have hiv I will definitely get the test. But just confirming

Brief Answer:
HIV negative

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thank you for follow up query.

The chances of transmission of HIV is nil with the given description. You can allay fears of HIV.

The symptoms are non specific and do not suggest HIV. HIV is diagnosed by tests and not symptoms. Many people can be asymptomatic too. Just not having or having symptoms do not suggest HIV.
But in your scenario the chances of transmission of HIV is nil.
You can go for HIV RNA PCR if possible. Or Duo test after 1 month or 6 weeks.
The final conclusive test will be for HIV 1&2 antibodies after 3 months

You can get back for any clarification.
