What Are The Chances Of HIV Transmission Through Unprotected Intercourse?

default
Posted on Wed, 26 Oct 2016
Question: Hi. I had protected sex with a hooker and there was no exchange of fluids. I was a little worried that the condom may not be 100% effective, so I ran a PCR RNA test after 11 days to check if I had contracted the virus. It returned as a negative result. Given this, can I use the PCR result as a reliable result? Do I have anything to worry about?

Hi
Thank you for query. Welcome to health care magic.
I am Dr Bharatesh D Basti answering your query.

The chances of transmission of HIV by unprotected intercourse with a HIV positive person is 1/200 to 1/1000.It is low. The chances of transmission of HIV with Protected intercourse is nil. If she is negative no chance of transmission of HIV. The risk is nil.
HIV RNA PCR after 11 days is 99% sensitive.

You can allay fears of HIV. You can get tested for HIV 1&2 antibodies after 3 months exposure to have final conclusive results and to allay your anxiety. The chances of tests coming positive later is nil.

You can get back for any clarification.

Given that, it's conclusive, I can relax and not get any more tests right? It's just that getting another test scares the life out of me. Can't I take pcr as conclusive?
