What Are The Chances Of Cervical Cancer Despite Negative HPV Test Results?
Is there a reference somewhere to find which strains of HPV put a woman at risk and for what? Same question for a man.
Is it currently possible for a man to get tested to determine if he is a carrier?
Risk of cervical cancer still exists from other strains.
Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Usually the strains that cause cervical cancer from a standard international souce are/ reference as follows -16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 66, 68, 70, 73, 82.
Among which strain 16, 18 are more common.
Hence based on above facts the risk of acquiring cervical cancer from other strains still exists even though it's lower.
Cervical smear testing helps to identify if there is any changes suggestive of HPV induced cancer, rather than screening for viral strains.
In case of a male the following strains are responsible
Carcinoma of anus
16, 31, 32, 33
Carcinoma of penis
16, 18
Yes, a man can also screen himself for these strains through appropriate blood tests.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
FDA non approved ELISA can be taken by men
Detailed Answer:
Hello Sir,
Detection of human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA is now approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is valuable as a screening tool in women older than 30 years.
Currently, there is no HPV test recommended for men.
The only approved HPV tests on the market are for screening women for cervical cancer. They are not useful for screening for HPV-related cancers or genital warts in men. Screening for anal cancer is not routinely recommended for men.
But having said that, if a man wishes to detect the viral load in his body, the following tests are advised:
Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody (Ab) against HPV 16 capsid.
Southern blot (highly sensitive but time-consuming), dot blot, and in situ hybridization.
Hope I have answered your query.
Take care
