What Are The Chances Of Contracting HSV-1 After Contact With Mucus From An Newborn With Potential HSV Infection?

Question: I just went to the delivery of a positive Hsv1 mom. Once the baby was placed on the radiant warmer and the NNP was suctioning out the mouth and nose with a bulb syringe. Some of the secretions splashed on my face near my mouth. I finished assessing the patient and left to wash my face. It was a vaginal delivery but the mom did not have any open lesions, only oral lesions. Is there any way possible that I can become infected with HSV.?

Brief Answer:
The chance of getting HSV-1 infection is very low

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

HSV virus may pass through placental barrier and the chance of the virus to transmit through the placental barrier is less than 5%. Almost all placental transmissions happen before 20 weeks of gestation and usually cause congenital anomalies. The risk of transplacental passage of the virus also depends the mothers history of HSV infection. If the mother is not having disseminated HSV or reactivation of latent infection the risk of placental transmission is even lower.

Please, do not worry. The chance of getting HSV infection through the exposure to secretions from a baby is very low if the mother does not have active genital lesions.

I hope the above information will be helpful for you. Please, feel free to ask me if there is anything else you need to know.

Thank you.
