What Are The Chances Of Pregnancy After Having Emergency Contraceptive Pill?

Question: Hello Doctor,
My wife generally has 28 days cycle her last period date was 1st October and she has 28 day cycle normally. We had unprotected sex on 9th October however I didnt ejaculated inside her and as precaution she took an emergency contraceptive pill an hour later. She had her withdrawal bleeding on 16th October and it lasted for 4-5 days. So please suggest by when she will be having her period. And is there any chances of conceiving though she took the contraceptive pill and her fertility period was on a later date. Please provide your valuable suggestions.

Brief Answer:
No pregnancy possible for sex on 9 th October.
Detailed Answer:
Hi.
With the history you have provided it is not possible to have a pregnancy at all. The ovulation date would have been on 14 th.
Now she had withdrawal bleeding on 16 th Oct which lasted for 4 o 5 days, the next period would be on 14 th November. Meaning her ovulation would be around 1 st November. Calculating the dates , she is in a unsafe period , meaning she can have pregnancy if there is intra-vaginal ejaculation from 27 October to 4 th November ( Now). You have to use protection for a few more days.
I hope this clarifies your query.
Please feel free to ask for further clarification if you need to.

Brief Answer:
withdrawal bleeding on 16th Oct - lasted 4-5 days
Detailed Answer:
Emergency contraceptive pill is made up of hormone which is far higher than the one used in monthly contraceptive pills.
So it does cause hormonal imbalance more than the monthly pills.
You have mentioned in the first query that > ''She had her withdrawal bleeding on 16th October and it lasted for 4-5 days.'' This may be taken as a menstrual flow as the bleeding was for 4 to 5 days. The date you mentioned is 16 th October... plus 28 days comes to be around 14 November... I hope i could make this simple.
Many patients will have varied history as the hormonal imbalance can cause unpredictable results and it may take months together for regularization of the periods in few patients. The data provided by the company is not complete in any respect. The effect of hormones will be different in different patients. So nothing is really perfectly predictable.
I hope this is OK for you, please feel free to ask for more if you need further clarification. Try avoid hormonal tablets of any sort in future as the results, side-effects, untoward actions and reactions are very much unpredictable.
You may please rate this answer, if you liked it. Take care .

Hello Doctor
Thanks for the promt reply. I have read in blogs that withdrawal bleeding and menstrual bleeding are two different things. But you wrote just because the withdrawal bleeding was for 4-5 days we can take it as a menstraul flow. Please put light on this. Also I would like to inform you that the blood was thin in comparison to menstrual flow and flow was more than normal menstraul flow. Please clarify.

Brief Answer:
yes, they are two different things
Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX
Yes, you have read right. I agree with you that withdrawal bleeding and menstrual bleeding are two different things. However in some occasions it's very difficult to distinguish between the two. Let me tell you about how withdrawal bleeding seems like. It usually does not last for 4-5 days. It just stays for a day or two. In withdrawal bleeding, blood is slightly thin in comparison to menstrual flow. Also, the amount of blood flow is usually less than the normal menstrual flow.
Though in all possibilities the bleeding she experienced on 16th October seems to be withdrawal bleed, the longer duration of bleed duration keeps the chances of normal (early) period alive.
Irrespective of the cause of bleed, her chances of conceiving in this cycle is close to zero. Chances are that she will have her next period within the first 2 weeks of November. We can wait up to 14 - 16th November before considering treatment (if deemed necessary).
Hope it's clear now.
Regards
