What Are The Chances Of Syphilis Transmission Through Unprotected Oral Sex?

default
Posted on Thu, 30 Apr 2015
Question: I am heterosexual male (no homosexual experience): What is the probability to get syphylis after performing unprotected cunnilingus to a female partner (no menses or bad smell during oral sex, did not have not a lot of vaginal fluid during cunnilingus). She admitted 2 weeks afterwards to be at very high risk (she is part of a swinger club in amsterdam). I had protected coital (vaginal only), no annulingus, and she did not performed oral sex on me. I got tested for gonorrhoea and chlamydia (urine and throat swab), still waiting for result in 3 days. This sexual encounters occurred 3 weeks ago.

Brief Answer:
Risk for Syphilis through cunnilingus is remote.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to HCM.
Thanks for posting your query.
The risk of STD and Syphilis through cunnilingus is very much unlikely. You had only protected vaginal sex. So your total risk for STD/HIV are negligible.

Should I get treated as a preventive measure with a one dose treatment of 2 grams of azithromycin?
Should I get retested after 3 months after the encounter again due to the incubation period?
Since the odds would have been to contract it in the throat, would a blood test be able to confirm the infection (would it become systemic instead of local)?

Brief Answer:
2gms of Azithromycin as single dose offers protection against bacterial STD

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.

There is nothing wrong in taking Tablet Azithromycin 2 gms as a single dose as a prophylaxis as it offers protection not only against Syphilis but also to Gonorrhea, Chancroid, Chlamydia infections. It also protects you from ordinary (non STD bacterial infection like Streptococcal).
Tests for STD can be done after 6 weeks and not necessary to wait till 3 months unlike that of HIV test. The negative test results assure you and you will be relieved from unnecessary mental tension. Otherwise you may have tempted to attribute even an ordinary tension head ache to the past activities. But I am sure that you will get all tests negative as Cunnilingus has a very low risk for STD/HIV.
