What Are The Effects Of Methamphetamine On Fetus During Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Thu, 24 Dec 2015
Question: I'm a recovering meth addict and I had a relapse around the time I found out I was 6 weeks pregnant. I'm now 10 weeks and I'm clean I haven't touched anything. I'm worried about the test they do when they drug test the baby. Will the baby test positive.
Is there a chance my baby would be ok?

Brief Answer:
Please clarify time with date of pregnancy and use

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

I can understand your concern for your baby.

Meth intake while being pregnant certainly has some effect on foetus. Those effects depend on quantity and frequency of intake.

To answer your query I need more exact details.

- For how much duration have you taken/smoke meth before pregnancy? Specify with frequency, amount and duration between last intake before pregnancy and you became pregnant.

- How much meth did you take/smoke after becoming pregnant? Specify frequency and quantity. Probabaly once when you were 6 weeks pregnant but I need clarification. If only single use during these 10 weeks pregnancy your baby will be ok likely.

- What is date of your last mensturation period? When did you have last intake of meth after that?

- Do you have any ultrasound check up for your baby ? If yes update the latest report?

- What type of drug test they will do on your baby to check positive or not?

Waiting for your reply to help you further.

Regards,
Dr.Chintan Solanki.

my last menstrual cycle was on January 22nd. and the last time I did it was the day I found out I was pregnant I guess I'm only 7 weeks I was off so its been 2 weeks since the last time I did it. I would only do it like once a week I'm starting N.A classes Tuesday.

Brief Answer:
STAY AWAY FROM METH NOW ONWARDS

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for follow up and sorry for delayed response.

You could not inform total duration and quantity of intake. However good part is you have stopped after you came to know about pregnancy.

Last menses on 22nd January means you conceived around 3rd February and your last meth exposure around 1st March. You have stopped since then. It suggests your fetus did not expose much. Just check with ultrasound that everything is fine.Meth is harmful to baby overall if exposed long during pregnancy.

Your baby will not be tested positive if you never take Meth now onwards until delivery.

It is good decision to start N.A.

Wish you good luck and take care.

Feel free to discuss if more queries.
