What Are The Effects Of Listening To Loud Music At A Night Club During Pregnancy?

Question: Hi! When I was 20 weeks pregnant last week, I was in a night club with loud music for about 40 minutes while as part of a bachelorette party. It was loud enough to need to shout to my friends to hear each other but not loud enough to hurt my ears. I had read that my baby is well protected but I later found out that there is a risk of damaging her hearing and I’ve been devastated ever since. I’ve been so worried that my morning sickness has come back and I’ve vomited three times in two days. I know I can’t go back and change anything but how worried do you think I should be about this one-time exposure to loud music? I’d love to be able to let this go in my mind but if there’s a good chance that my kid will have hearing problems, I want to start preparing myself for this horrible possibility.

Brief Answer:
No problem to baby

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Following is my reply:

1) Exposure to high decibels once in a while does not affect baby in any way and does not cause hearing defect.

2) Baby cannot hear loud sounds in womb and it does not make any difference to the baby.

3) I don't see any reason to worry about deafness in your baby. Stay relaxed.

Hi Dr.

Thank you for your reply! I’m feeling more relaxed now.

One more question: the night after the club, I went to a 1.5-2hr show that also had music on the loud side but not as loud as the club. Do you think that my baby’s ears are still ok with the two nights in a row of music? Other than that one celebration weekend, I almost never attend these kinds of events.
