Brief Answer:
It is possibly due to blocking of eustachian tube

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

If there is ear pain during an episode of cold, then it is possibly due to blocking of eustachian tube. Eustachian tube block will recover with recovery of cold. Yawning and chewing a toffee can help.

Does he have discharge from ear or hard of hearing?

It may not be safe to instill ear wax drops in child's ear. It is better to see an ear, nose and throat doctor and get his ears and throat examined. ENT doctor can remove any wax carefully. You can simply continue the same treatment for cold.

What are you giving him to recover from cold? I can suggest further according to his current medicines.

Dr. Vaishalee
