What Are The Repercussions Of Accidental Usage Of Glycerine In Nose?
Usually no problem, but if swelling occurs, see doctor. Closely monitor
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for your query.
I'm Dr. Shuba Hariprasad and will be answering your query today.
Glycerine can cause mucosa irritation, burning and an allergic reaction.
This may or may not occur.
If these symptoms occur, he may find it difficult to breathe and should see a doctor right away for medications to reduce inflammation and swelling.
If no symptoms occur, then it is OK. Symptoms usually occur within 2-3 hours of contact.
Try to use an absorbent towel to take it off (don't insert it up the nose, just put it in the nares/nasal opening)
Ask him to gently blow his nose.
Putting water in the eyes can help flush out some glycerine.
CAUTION:
- DO NOT SNIFF ANY WATER OR SPRAY ANY WATER UP THE NOSE. HE SHOULD NOT BREATHE IT IN.
-DON'T BLOW TOO HARD OR PUT ANY OBJECTS UP THE NOSE.
-SLEEP WITH HEAD SLIGHTLY ELEVATED TONIGHT.
Once again, this usually doesn't cause any problems but if inflammation/swelling of the nose occurs and it gets difficult to breathe, go to the. Emergency right away.
Hope this helps.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Wish you both good health.
Regards,
Dr. Shuba Hariprasad
Throat and lungs need to examined for signs of inflammation
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for the follow up.
Yes, as long as it has gone away with any symptoms it is OK.
However, I would recommend that you consult his physician to check for any throat redness or inflammation. This needs to be treated based on its severity.
In most cases, there is nothing to worry about but I would feel comfortable if it were examined as you mentioned he had burning throat.
It seems that he may have either swallowed it or inhaled it. This needs to be examined and treated if any inflammatory changes are seen.
Hope this helps and he feels better.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Regards,
Dr. Shuba Hariprasad
