What Are The Repercussions Of The Accidental Ingestion Of Eucalyptus Oil By Child?
Question: Hi my 12 weeks old baby inhaled ayurvedic formulation containing eucalyptus oil and mentha cinnamon. It was in the steamer and she was in the same room 6-7 feets away from steamer. Is there any side effects. Is it safe. Baby is feeding well. What are the signs I should watch. Should I visit Dr immediately.
Brief Answer:
Inhaled is safe
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
Usually inhaled compounds you had mentioned if only for a short time is safe.
It shouldn't cause any problems.
The poisonings which we see in our practice is usually related to accidental ingestion of eucalyptus oil which can get dangerous enough to cause problems like aspiration or seizures.
In your child's case he had been at a distance and only inhaled.
I don't think you need to worry.
Just make sure he is feeding well and passing urine well.
If any change in usual behaviour including cough or breathing difficulties consult your doctor immediately.
Wishing your child speedy recovery.
Regards
Dr Arun
