Posted on Fri, 3 Jul 2015
Question: Hello Dr,
Yesterday I think my 1 yr old may have swollowed a nose stud, I say may as the box it was in was open on the floor and empty and after a thourogh search I can't find it, my mother told me not to worry and check her stools which I have been doing but there is no sign of it yet, I am concerned as the post is a right angle coming off a dragonfly, and I am scared it could hurt her insides.
my daughter seems upset and was playing with her belly in the bath tonight but she is also has a tooth cutting through, she is sleeping now and I am not sure if I should take her to ED as X-ray won't be open or wait till morning an see the Dr or just wait until it passes?
Thank you in advance

Brief Answer:
Please wait till morning since the child is sleeping and comfortable

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. I have seen many children who are brought in by their parents for suspected swallowing of foreign bodies. All nose studs have a metallic part and if she has swallowed it then the object will be visible on X ray.

2. If your child is sleeping and not in discomfort then it is unlikely that there is any possible complication, besides even you are not sure if she has indeed swallowed the nose stud. Touching the belly in itself is not a sign of pain but she needs a X ray to locate the ingested nose stud before any treatment is provided.

3. The warning signs of an impacted nose stud might include pain in the stomach or lower abdomen, vomiting and refusal to eat because of discomfort, passing dark stools which is indicative of altered blood, therefore you might wait and consult the doctor in the morning and get a X ray done for confirmation. Meanwhile please search the area where the nose stud might have been dropped and also check her stools for the nose stud should it be excreted in the feces.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
