What Are The Risks Of Being A Lung Transplant Donor?
![default](/r/images/default.png)
Question: I have offered to a give a friend one of my lungs since he will need two replacements to over come his cancers. What should I expect in seeing whether I am a good match, the cost of the transplant and who should be financially liable? I am 70, the recipant is 66. I have never smoked, have had sleep apnae since about 2000, have used a cpap since then at 7cc volume nightly I take meds to reduce my blood pressure and I have some afib like issues but passed the stress test in such away that my heart doctor said my recovery was faster than a pace maker, and medication will continue to be the treatment plan. My Doctor daughter, also thinks that the use of the cpap has increased my lung capacity to enhance the chances of success. Finally, what are the risk of death and duration of pain and recovery? Thank to you. xxxxxxx XXXXXXX xxxxxxxxxx.
Brief Answer:
may not be possible for you to donate
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.
First of all, has a lung transplant been recommended for your friend by a team of doctors? Because lung transplant for cancer is not a routine thing.
Even if we consider lung transplant, you may not be able to donate. As you already require cpap, if one lung is removed, you can be permanently oxygen dependant. Your pulmonologist is unlikely to allow that. In any case, donation is seldom allowed for a 70 year old, even if otherwise fit.
Duration of pain is around 5-7 days while recovery imay require 2-3 weeks. Life risk around 5%.
Hope this helps. I will be available for follow up.
