What Are The Side Effects Of Atenolol?

default
Posted on Sat, 10 Jun 2017
Question: I recently had my blood pressure pills changed to Valsartan along with Chlorthalidone a water pill.
Before that I was on Atenolol. I had no side effects now. I do with Valsatan. They had to lower the dosage to
500mg. I had severe side effects with too much. Please tell me what I should do.

Brief Answer:
Start taking Amlodipine, it's much safer and well tolerated.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting on this forum.

Atenolol is a beta blocker and is no longer a first-line antihypertensive drug.

I would suggest you to ask your cardiologist to start you on calcium channel blockers like Amlodipine or Cilnidipine. They are very safe drugs and are very well tolerated by the patient (much better then chlorthalidone which can even cause electrolyte imbalance).

As you are not feeling ok with valsartan and CTD I would suggest you switch over to Amlodipine 5 mg initially. Monitor blood pressure every third day. The dose can be increased to 10 mg(depends on the response of your body).

Hope I answered your query.

Brief Answer:
Follow up.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,
Metformin is very safe and often very well tolerated by diabetic patients. It's usually the initial drug of choice used by most of the diabetologists.
Risk of hypoglycemia is also not there as it does not have a direct effect on insulin secretion.
So yes you can take it.
I wish you a fast recovery.

Thank you.
