Donepezil is enzyme inhibitor. It inhibits an enzyme that breaks down a neurotransmitter (a substance responsible for nerve conduction) mostly in the brain. It improves nerve functioning by improving memory and awareness. But it may also cause the following side effects:
The most common side effects of donepezil are loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting/diarrhea, not sleeping well, feeling tired, weakness or muscle cramps. The side effects are usually mild and as the body adjusts to the medicine they may get better.
Less commonly it may cause constipation, fainting, dizziness, drowsiness, weight loss, frequent urination, joint pain, joint swelling, depression, headache and unusual bruising/bleedings.
Rare side effects are:
Gastrointestinal: black stools, bloating, dryness of mouth, loss of bowel control
Respiratory: sneezing, wheezing, cough, nasal congestion, pain in chest or throat, shortness of breath
Genitourinary: frequent urge to urinate, decreased urination, bloody urine, loss of bladder control, difficult or painful urination and
blurred vision, cataract, eye irritation, high or low blood pressure, chills, fever, flushing of skin, mood or mental changes, confusion.
