Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for posting
I have gone through your query and understand your concern. In rheumatoid arthritis following drugs put together know as "Disease Modifying Anti Rheumatic Drugs (DMARDs)” are routinely prescribed. They will not only suppress the arthritis, but also helps in preventing further progression and relapses. These are Methotrexate, Hydroxychloroquine, Sulfasalazine and Leflunomide. These drugs are given either alone or preferably in combination under rheumatologist/ Orthopaedic surgeon guidance.
They have side effect mainly on Bone marrow; liver and kidney.Hence, these drugs are monitored by blood test every 3 months.
Two new inject able drugs are available in the market for treating Rheumatoid Arthritis. They belong to Anti-TNF (Tumour necrosis factor) drugs these are
Remicade (INFLIXIMAB), Enbrel (ETANERCEPT).These drugs are very effective in controlling Rheumatoid Arthritis, but are quite expensive and have side effect. Patient selection is must prior to starting them.
Hope this suffices and I shall be glad to answer any further query.
Regards
