What Are The Side Effects Of Restoril On The Liver?

default
Posted on Sat, 29 Nov 2014
Question: I would like to know if my medication is safe for my liver. I have Hepatitis C. My liver enzymes are 73 for AST and 80 for ALT. Lab work was done 10/22/14. These figures have been the same since 2001, 13 years ago, when diagnosed for Hepatitis C.
I have been taking XXXXXXX for canal stenosis and degenerative disc disease sine 1993. I take 3 per day and a 15 mg Restoril at bedtime.
Since my liver functions are stable, I would think the medication is not hard on the liver.
Please give me your professional opinion.
Thank you. XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Need to know results of serological tests...

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

1. Both XXXXXXX and Restoril are being metabolized in the liver, and could be a possible cause to increased transaminases levels.

2. However, you are also reporting to have hepatitis C, which can also cause high transaminases.

3. I need to know the serological tests results for hepatitis C before giving a final opinion.

Brief Answer:
yes, XXXXXXX may elevate liver panel,,,

Detailed Answer:
Hi
With regard to XXXXXXX 350 mg it is myo relaxant( muscle relaxant )and it is metabolized in liver.
In rare causes it may elevate liver enzymes, it is a side effect of this medication.
I would advice you to talk with your doctor changing the treatment or reduce the dose.
wishing you all the best

I take 3 Somas a day and a Restoril 15 mg at bedtime. This is the frequency I am prescribed by my doctor.

Before I go to Labcorp, I take one XXXXXXX

If I do not take a XXXXXXX before the labwork, will the results be lower for my liver functions?

Brief Answer:
Should stop meds at least 15 days prior to testing

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

I advise to stop using XXXXXXX and Restoril for at least 15 days prior to testing to see if the level of transaminases could be affected by their use.

Taking medications prior to testing can alter the results.

If I stopped taking my medication for one day, I wouldn't be able to walk with my walker.
I take Restoril to prevent having sleep paralysis. I have had this syndrome since a very serious car accident in 1979. Most likely before you were born. You do not respond to my questions as a doctor of medicine, especially as a gastroenterologist.

I paid $35.00 for your incompetent answers.

I was told by my doctor, who I have know for more than 30 years, I can take this medicine, if absolutely necessary.

Yes, it is absolutely necessary.

Brief Answer:
Thank you for additional data...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

1. My advice was based on a general rule on how we operate before a testing.

2. Specifically in your case, taking into consideration your medical problems and the fact that you are taking both XXXXXXX and Restoril, your actual transaminases levels won't be worrisome. Furthermore, you are not reporting any other health problem, so, such slightly elevated TA are not worrisome.

3. Restoril is a benzodiazepine drug. In your case, I need to know the exact diagnosis for which it was prescribed. Your doctor prescribed if it is absolutely necessary. Sometimes, patients got used of this medication and think the worst if they stop using it. That's why your doctor prescribed "if absolutely necessary" (which depends on your actual medical condition and not on what you think you might have). It wont' cause any serious problem if you skip 1 or 2 doses prior to testing.

4. Thank you for your sincere comments. It is difficult to work with chronic patients as they are used of what they have and what they take. It is more difficult for an online doctor to approach the online patients without medical records and physical examination. We are doing our best to give second opinion for your actual health problems. We will continue to do our best although the "VIRTUAL" obstacles.

Thank you and all the best!
Dr.Klerida
