What Are The Side Effects Of Toprol XL And Supermet XL?
hee"). After I began ignoring these calls, the delusions began to lessen. I have noticed however, that during the night I wake up to one or two calls...less severe, but still troubling. I think this might provide your Thursday night with a little humorous sidetrip. Actually, I think it's pretty hilarious, too...that is, unless it's not medication side effects. I had always taken AstraZeneca metoprolol. Do you think this side effect could be partially caused by the confusion and hallucinations that Supermet XL may cause and could be possibly exacerbated by the recent wellbutrin episodes? I am a 66 year young woman in good health otherwise. I'm countin' on you, Doc to tell me "yep, that's it" and "no way is this a shining example of early senility". I apologize for the length, but hope it brings a smile to you and your colleagues faces.
Supermet XL is the probable reason for symptoms
Detailed Answer:
Hello, Welcome to Health Care Magic
I can understand your concern. You were taking Toprol XL 50 and then started on Supermet XL 50. Both drugs are same and consists of Metoprolol. Metoprolol is a beta blocker drug. The drug is a lipophillic drug and can cross blood barrier to reach brain. There are numerous case reports available which found that Metoprolol can cause CNS side effects and can result in visual hallucinations and some times abnormal belief. Though you were taking Toprol and didn't develop such symptoms and then developed with Supermet. This probably happened because of different manufacturing processes involved in making the drugs and slight differences in pharmacodynamics can occur between two drugs of different makers. Also Wellbutrin or Bupropion is known to cause or aggravate hallucinations, and the drugs increased risk of hallucinations. I don't think this is related to any psychotic process or any senile changes, thought if symptoms persist then evaluation is warranted.
If beta blockers are needed for your BP control then you can ask your doctor to shift you to some hydrophillic beta blockers like Atenolol, which don't cause Central nervous system (CNS) side effects. This would reduce these side effects.
Thanks, hope this helps, please ask again if you have more doubts.
