Rheumatoid arthritis is treated depending on the duration, course and involvement of joints.

The medications used in treatment of rheumatiod arthritis are as follows
1. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can relieve pain and reduce inflammation. Starting with low power medications like ibuprofen and then there are high power ones like diclofenac.

2. Corticosteroid drug like prednisone. It reduces inflammation in joints. It is taken orally and under strict supervision. There are many side effects and it must be taken as per prescription.

3. Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs). These include drugs like methotrexate, leflunomide , hydroxychloroquine and sulfasalazine. Side effects vary but may include liver damage, bone marrow suppression and severe lung infections therfore given only if required.

4. Biologic agents. This is the latest in DMARDs and included medications like abatacept, adalimumab, anakinra, certolizumab, etanercept, golimumab , infliximab, rituximab, tocilizumab and tofacitinib which is a new, synthetic DMARD. These drugs also increase the risk of infections.

Usually for severe cases, doctors give a combination of medications from the above cases and includes drugs from group 3 and 4.

It is advised not to take any medication by herself and to consult a rheumatologist specialist and clinically examined followed by X rays and then take medications.
