What Are The Symptoms Associated With Living With A Bad Hip?
I had contracted Polio at 6months and was given the new vaccine,by Salk, in fall of that year. I had several corrections surgical, with last in 1979. I wear an othotic to take up the the .25" deficit. Also, my lower leg is smaller than left. My othopedist suspects that a std hip may not fit due to the angle is not there. I thought
that Polio affected the lower leg. Now is seems it may have affected the upper leg. What do you suggest the next move would be in diagnosing this problem? Post Polio Syndrome How to test for it? what are the symptoms associated with living with a bad hip, that I may encounter?
A physical examination to a physician is needed to confirm the diagnosis.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
My name is dr.Dorina Gurabardhi.
I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Post Polio Syndrome diagnosis is based mostly on clinical examination.
There are several criteria that confirm this diagnosis.
In my opinion a physical examination to a physician is the next move to confirm the diagnosis and do the needed examinations.
Some examination that should be done are:
-an electromyography to valuate the neuro motor loss
-a MRI
-a muscle biopsy to esclude other diseases
Some of the symptoms related to a bad hip are:
-joint pain
-loss of motion of the hip
-swelling over the hip
-tenderness of the hip
The symptoms can be relieved by using antiinflammatory medications or prescribed corticosteroid medication. You should consult your doctor about this treatment.
The most important thing is to have regular check ups.
Hope my answer was helpful.
If you have any other question Ill be glad to help.
Kind Regards,

Can a bad hip cause windedness, fatigue, and loss of sleep.?
Can a bad hip get worse over time? There is no cartaligenous cushion between the
the ball and socket. As it were, bone on bone. I 'm already in constant pain 7-8 level
Celebrex doesn't work. Lyrica, doesn't work, melaxocam helps a little, cortisone shots helps mobility and alleviate some pain, temporarily, and heat helps slightly.
What other things can help.?
As post polio syndrome, The electromyograhy shows severe nerve damage to lower leg. and upper leg moderate nerve damage. The former indicates cause from
Polio, while the latter refers to the back and a unstable L4-5. This instability was corrected surgically in 8/17. A fall in 4/17 injured the Top quad muscle in right leg.
This found by a hip eval during a second opinion. A tear still giving problems a year later, and adding to the hip.The orthopedic Dr's don't want and MRI. I believe that I do because there might further damage not seen with just palpation . Do I go to my PCP to get authorization?
Bad hip can cause fatigue, follow the advice below
Detailed Answer:
Hi again,
of course a bad hip can cause fatigue and loss of sleep because you are dealing with pain every day.
Being fatigue can also aggravate the pain on the other side.
Meloxicam is a good alternative to manage the pain.I suggest you to use also prescribed naproxen and to continue the corticosteroids.
Acupuncture can help to low the density of the pain.
Bad hip can get worse in time but with proper management of the pain and regular check ups you can keep the symptoms under control.
I think that a MRI is necessary to see in details the damage and lead in the proper treatment.
Hope my answer was helpful.
