What Are The Symptoms Of Geneticaly Loose Ligaments?

Question: While leaning over turned slightly to my left and reaching for something; I felt a pop in my left lower rib cage. Immediate pain and now lingering over four days, made worse with coughing, sneezing, deep breath or hiccupping. I am 64 yo, work full time as a nurse, and this has happened before when overreaching into a washing machine tub to get at wash-on right side and not as painful. Is this possibly geneticaly loose ligaments making me prone to this?
Brief Answer:
Not genetically prone ligaments now.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.
Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:
1. Genetic cause would not start at this age.
2. If you had similar symptoms or joint abnormalities or dislocation frequently in the past, then it can be thought of.
3. Abnormal stretching, which you are not used to could be the cause.
4. You need to stretch yourself, warm the body and muscles, as any sudden stretching can cause muscles spasm, which you are experiencing now.
5. Muscle relaxants, mild stretching and heat application will be helpful.
Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.

So you're saying it's muscle related (spasm) and not a dislocated or popped rib? As I said,I have done this several times before on the right side over a period of 25 years. I also do have problems from childhood or turning over my ankles and have passed it on to my children and grandchildren. My son has had a cadaver transplant to both ankles and my youngest daughter,a marathon runner, has had numerous sprains and may need surgery. Both in their 30's and both have my very thin, boney ankles. Can wearing an abdominal binder over rib area help support short term? Electric stimulus seems to help a lot.
Brief Answer:
Yes, abdominal binder could be helpful.

Hi,
Thanks for asking again.
Disease related to tendon or muscle - could be due to malnutrition or a collagen vascular disorder. However, it would not be limited to joints, and would have affected your cardiac muscles too.
However, since it is frequent, and is running in family - very difficult to rule out. However, malnutrition and inadequate warm up, abnormal posture, shoes, etc could all be responsible, as it is only the ankles involvement in the family. Boney ankles, seriously suggest reduced muscle growth and possible malnutrition.
At present, you can wear an abdominal binder over rib area. It could help in reducing movement at joint. Avoid wearing it too tight, as it can affect breathing. Wear it for shorter periods, and remove it, to avoid any tissue injuries around breast area.
Relax for a few days. Warming up and having regular exercises along with protein and vit C rich diet to improve healing will help.
Electric stimulus or TENS therapy is very beneficial in acute pain. No side effects. Use it. Medications may not be necessary along with TENS therapy.
Avoid stretching excessively or going into abnormal positions. Know your physical limits. Take it slow. Have a active and healthy life.
Hope it helps.
