What Are The Symptoms Of Pleural Effusion?

First of all your son most likely doesn't have pleural effusion because it's impossible to be missed by chest x ray. As long as his results were normal than other cause should be searched for.
Secondly based on the pain characteristics it's suggestive for pericarditis or gastrointestinal issues.
If he was my patient I would recommend to do the following examinations to find out what is causing his symptoms:
- cardiac echo
- stress test
- abdominal echo
- upper endoscopy
At tge end if the pain seems to get worse don't hesitate to bring him to ER once again.
