What Are The Symtptoms Of A Stroke?

default
Posted on Sat, 3 May 2014
Question: Hello, I am in excellent health, 39, and had a strange sensation today. My brain felt a little "pain" at the same time my arm or hand did (dont remember). It was disconcerting but not particularly painful. I had an MRI on my head about two years ago for a random bad headache and it was normal. I have no other symptoms of anything related to a stroke and am feeling fine. Should I be worried anyway?

Brief Answer: Symptom does not sound lie stroke. Detailed Answer: Hi, Thank you for posting your query. I have noted your symptom and would like to reassure you that this does not sound like a stroke. Moreover, you have no risk factors for stroke such as diabetes, high BP, cholesterol, smoking, etc. Since you have had a normal MRI earlier, there is no need to go for a repeat MRI now. As of now, there is no need to worry. If symptom repeats, then, you may see your doctor. I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information. Well thank you for the assurance, it is very helpful. I thought the likelihood was low in the absence of other symptoms but just needed clarification. I did get the MRI about 2 years ago though, is it impossible/unlikely that something could form that fast? That is the last question I have and I want to thank you for your time.

Brief Answer: New disease is unlikely. Detailed Answer: Thank you for getting back. Yes, most problems such as benign tumours are not possible as your scan was normal two years ago. Stroke is unlikely in view of lack of typical symptoms. The only disease that can be seen within two years is a cancerous brain tumor, but your symptoms are not suggestive of that! Ok, I lied. One more quick question, then I will close and make a positive review. I knew the unlikelihood of a stroke given my age and condition, but what could it have been? Like I said they were simultaneous and it definitely came from inside my head not outside like musculature so it seems awful coincidental. Anyway thanks for your time and I appreciate all you have told me.

Brief Answer: Most likely a transient chemical imbalance. Detailed Answer: Thank you for getting back. Most likely due to transient chemical (neurotransmitter) imbalance in brain caused that neuralgic pain. Best wishes, Dr Sudhir Kumar MD DM (Neurology)
