What Can I Do To Manage Depression When I Have Anemia?

Question: My internal medicine doctor of OHSU is a resident and prescribed Zoloft for my symptoms of depression. My Hemotologist, also at OHSU, is planning to treat my anemia, unknown type, with an IV of Iron on 9/13, the earliest appointment I can get. I have not started the Zoloft yet, something is stopping me from doing so before I investigate whether the Zoloft can or will interfere with blood or iron production. My resident doctor, while well meaning, doesn't appear to have all his facts straight yet. If there is any possibility that the Sertraline can interfer with the effectiveness of the IV Iron treatment I really need and will receive on 9/13, can you please recommend one or more antidepressants that I can ask my Internal Medicine resident to consider as a better compliment to the IV Iron treatment. My depression symptoms are classic: anhedonia, feelings of helplessness and hopelessness, difficulty falling and staying asleep, feelings that it may not be helpful to anyone for me to remain on the planet, including myself, no intent to harm myself, no he of harming myself or others, poor memory, and slowed movement, particularly walking. I am a PhD Clinical Psychologist who's never been diagnosed as depressed and has used my skills as a psychogist and my faith in God to treat all previous episodes of saddness with mild physical symptoms. This time, it's greater than in the past, and is still transient. Can you help me to answer this question? Thanks, Randi R. XXXXXXX PhD

Brief Answer:
Serotonin reuptake inhibitors

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Since you are having depression and is having anemia you can take drugs such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors along with anxiolytic such as Escitalopram or Alprazolam which will not interfere with hemoglobin synthesis

Cognitive behavior therapy also recommended along with medicines to yield a better and comprehensive result.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards
