Question: Starting last night I began experiencing a brief pinching type pain on and off in my central upper abdomen. The pain occurs every few hours and lasts for seconds to minutes in an on and off fashion. It is not intense pain but it is noticable. What can be the cause? How to I get rid of the pain?

Brief Answer:
Hello, welcome to ask a doctor services.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

You are suffering from pinching type of pain on and off in the upper abdomen. I can understand your concern. Such pain can be indicative of indigestion, gastritis, acute gastroenteritis, constipation or colitis.

You are advised to keep yourself adequately hydrated to help better bowel movement, include fibre in your regular diet, you can take laxatives to prevent constipation.

Constipation triggers gastritis. Take homemade food that is nutritious and easy to digest. Prefer to take boiled food over fried food. Take food cooked in olive oil than in any other vegetable oil.

Cut on red meat, refined flour, full fat dairy products, etc. Cut on any food that flares up your symptoms.

Avoid eating raw food or semi cooked food. Take food that is well cooked for a couple of days. Avoid taking packaged food, processed food, oily, spicy, junk food. Take fresh well-cooked food that is prepared at home.

Get clinically examined by a GP, get required blood tests and imaging tests (endoscopy, CT, MRI, etc) done to detect any underlying medical condition like ulcer (peptic or oesophageal), IBS, UTI, renal stones, cholecystitis, hepatitis, etc, that may be causing you symptoms & discomfort.

Your treatment will depend on the pathology detected and the severity of the symptoms. You will be given combination treatment diet control, physical therapy, conservative treatment.

Surgery is only recommended if required. To get rid of pain you can take antacids or PPIs, one stat when needed. You will get relieve in 20 -30 minutes. This is symptomatic treatment. You will be treated for the cause to get rid of the problem from the root.

Avoid sedentary lifestyle. Do not smoke, cut on alcohol intake and avoid addictions if any. Switch to healthy lifestyle.

Hope I have answered your question. Take care.
