What Can Be Two Drug Tests For Phenobarbital?

default
Posted on Fri, 27 Dec 2024
Question: i came up suspiosus on my last two drug tests for phenobarbital. I had no idea what it was and I seriously couldn't see why anyone would take a seizure medicine if they didn't need it. My sister who has been an RN for 35yrs told me try and see if it could be related to another medicine I was taking. According to the blog on Goodrx I currently take 5 medicines that would cause this, but I ave been taking four of them for awhile. The only new one I have the psychiatrist at the VA prescribed me to try correct my sleep pattern. It was Quetiapine which is used for a few things. I started taking this about 4 months ago and I take 1 and 1/2 pills at bedtime. Just looking up phenobarbital I definitely would not even think about taking that drug unless I had Seizures. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have nurse visit on Wednesday for a urinalysis.

Brief Answer:
False-positive result possibly from the metabolites.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I have read your question.

Quetiapine use is found to result in false-positive urine test for a number of other drugs such as opioids, benzodiazepines, and other drugs such as phenobarbital in your case, etc.

These false-positive results are linked to the metabolites of drugs breakdowns that are excreted mainly by the urine.

So, if you don’t use phenobarbital ( you are right about its use since it is an anti-seizure drug) the urine test result is very likely to be caused by the metabolites of other drugs including Quetiapine.

Would it help any to include all my medications? At this point I see my PCM who make the decision on whether he will fill my morphine after a urinalysis tomorrow.
