Hi,
The exact cause of this condition is not known. However, we do know that the existence of antibiotics in the system that tend to attack the nervous tissue of the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves leading to their destruction and loss of neurological function. It affects men 10times more than women and most of them are in the age range 32-41.
Initial treatment is with steroids such as methylprednisolone. In severe cases, plasmapheresis is done.
Long-term treatment to prevent further attacks is done with immunosuppressants. Some of these immunosuppressants are azathioprine, mycophenolate mofetil rituximab, methotrexate, mitoxantrone, and oral glucocorticoids.
