What Can Cause Numbness And Pain In Balls Of My Feet And Toes?

Question: About three years ago I began to experience numbness and pain in balls of my feet and toes, some days worse than others. I have also developed intense and persist itching itching on both lower legs, to the extent I often break the skin and bleeding occurs. I sometimes experience itching on my lower arms, but not to the extent of the intensity of on my legs.
I had lower back problems in 2000 which began with instance pain in my left buttock and sudden drop foot of my left foot and numbness on the left side of the same lower leg which is still is somewhat numb today. The drop foot resolved in about three months, and during that time I had intense pain along the top of the foot also which resolved as well and never returned. An MRI and EMG showed bulging discs in L-4 and L-5 of my spine in addition to stenosis, and other issues which I no longer recall.
When the numbness and pain began in my both feet about three years ago, it started with severe pain in my lower back which persisted for several weeks, particularly upon waking, and subsided eventually and hasn't recurred. My internist believes I have neuropathy and should see a neurologist, which I never have. A few months ago, I developed a large red patch on the outside of my left calf from the ankle to mid calf and a 2 inch square patch behind my calf. My physician prescribed betamethasone dipropionate ointment which doesn't appear to have done anything beneficial. I also use CeraVe ithch relief cream which helps to an extent, but nothing really works to help when the itching becomes overwhelming, which is every day. From the history and symptoms I explained, what would you diagnosis be that is causing my problems. My blood work has always been normal. Thank you so much

Brief Answer:
Peripheral neuropathy to consider besides spinal stenosis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

The MRI and EMG in the past showed that there is spinal stenosis with substantial nerve function compromise.

These findings are in line with your past symptoms of pain, numbness and drop foot.

The pruritis may be a sign of peripheral neuropathy, it also may be fungal infection.

There are several underlying causes of peripheral neuropathy, including low vitamin B12, diabetes, viral infections, etc. so you should see a Neurologist for these issues.

A Dermatologist also should help with the skin problems.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if I can assist you further.
Thanks.
