What Can This Black Area Thumb Nail?

Question: I am including a picture of my thumb nail. See the black area. It was a very small black are about 4 days ago.it does not hurt. No swelling. I do not recall damaging the nail. What can this be? Do I need to have the nail removed. I really hope Not..

As you are diabetic, it could be fungal nail infection.
one picture would help me to identify.It does not look like fungal.
It could be bleeding.
You need to get examined by physician.
