What Cause Low Blood Sugar Levels In A New Born Child?
Question: I have a new grandson, born this morning. Daughter in law is breastfeeding. Not her first time. He was eating well. Nurse continued to prick his heel to check his blood sugar level. It was 35 and was supposed to be 50. They took him to the NICU. Could you please tell me about newborn blood sugar levels? Thanks very much!

Dear Ms
Blood sugar level by Glucometer of less than 40mg/dl and less than 45 mg/dl by plasma level laboratory estimation is considered as neonatal Hypoglycemia .
As the level of of your grandson is 35, it is Hypoglycaemia(low blood sugar level).
Do not worry it can be taken care of by Intravenous dextrose especially if the baby is term baby.
Do get back to me if you need any further assistance, will be glad to assist you.
