What Cause Mouth Sores While On Antibiotics?
Question: My 21 year old son was seen by a doctor this past Monday due to a high fever and was diagnosed with tonsillitis and prescribed amoxicillin. He then developed sores in his mouth on tongue, swollen gums and sores around his mouth. He has not been able to eat or drink due to the pain and is very fatigued. He's lost 11lbs in a week. Should I take him to the ER!? We called the doctor Wednesday about the mouth issue and he called in valtrex but it's not getting better. Not sure what the hospital could do. Could it be an allergic reaction to the antibiotics? He's never sick and I'm concerned.
Brief Answer:
Needs thorough evaluation and care
Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking
I read your question and i understand your concern. Tonsillitis can be very severe some times hampering all activities including feeding. Prefer liquid diet and take adequate fluids. Antibiotics allergies are unlikely, however canker sores are less common with tonsillitis but possible. Get him evaluated for alternative causes like mononucleosis etc. Get a throat swab done, see if antibiotics he is using are sensitive or not. if issues persist, he may be hospitalised for IV care and considered for tonsillectomy.
I hope it helps. Take good care of your son and don't forget to close the discussion please.

The doctor did blood work to rule out mononucleosis. He just can't eat or drink - even water hurts. Should I take him to the ER? I don't want to go there and spend the money if they cannot help him. I just don't know what to do.
Thank you for your response.

Brief Answer:
Yes go to ER
Detailed Answer:
If your son can't take oral even fluids, i am afraid he will need hydration and nutrition supplementation via intravenous route and that will need a visit to a hospital. ER even if you say he cant take oral. As i said he may need hospitalisation.
