Posted on Tue, 2 Dec 2014
Question: My girlfriend took ipill for the first time on 1st Nov. We had unprotected sex so we are a little scared so she took the pill. Its been one week and she hasn't bled till now and since the past two-three days she is having severe pain on her left leg but with no swelling. What should we do? Her last periods ended on 23rd October. I didn't discharge inside her. Her last period started on 18th October and it was late as we started having sex from 4th September. It was the first time for both of us. What to do about the pain in her leg.

Brief Answer:
It may be due to thrombophlebitis

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for using healthcaremagic.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

Although presence of leg pain without swelling can occur due to multiple factors including infection, injury, or inflammation but with background information of ipill use it is possible that she developed thrombophlebitis, an inflammation of leg veins.

This complication is not common with the ipill use but taking a doctors opinion in person is required at this moment.

There is also possibility that her leg pain is not related to ipill use and it is just an infection which occurred after ipill use.

So to conclude you are requested to see a doctor for further evaluation. He will take complete blood count along with physical examination of affected leg. If he suspects thrombophlebitis as a likely cayuse of problem he may order an Doppler of left leg.

Hope I am able to answer your concerns.

Is it serious? I am very scared and even she is. Which doctor should we go to? Since today is Sunday is it ok if we go tomorrow? Can you explain me a little bit more about thrombophlebitis?

Brief Answer:
I do not think you should wait

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for reverting back to me.

Thrombophlebitis is inflammation of deep veins in leg that leads to obstruction of venous flow. The abnormal clot may some time dislodge leading to blocking arteries in lung or other important organs.

It is not serious but i do not think you should wait for another day. It is always better to seek medical consultation as soon as possible.

It is possible that everything comes out normal or she may have simple infection causing leg pain on further exploration but that does not allow us to take risks.

Thanks

Brief Answer:
The pill does not cause constipation

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for reverting back to me.

I am happy to hear that she is completely alright and there is no risk of thrombophlebitis.

At the same time the constipation may be de to decreased activity because of leg pain. The ipill does not cause constipation as a side effect.

Hope I am able to answer your concerns.
