What Causes UTI After Taking Invokana?

default
Posted on Wed, 30 Sep 2015
Question: I have a uti from taking invokana. Have had it since I started taking medication, about 9 months ago. For the past two days, I have had some bleeding. I don't know if that is just a symptom of a prolonged uti, or if it could be something more serious. (I had a hysterectomy in 1995). The blood is bright red, and there was a small clot in it just now. No heavy, just on the toilet tissue.
Thanks

Brief Answer:
Invokana is the criminal. Change the medication. Treat UTI

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

I read your question and i understand your concern. I feel your agony and you call it co incident we laughed very hard in the yesterday morning round in the ward where my professor criticised this SGLT2 inhibitors like canagliflozin AKA invokana which leads to glucose in urine and we all know bacteria love glucose. So your using invokana has triggered chronic UTI and chronic UTI always presents with hematuria ( blood in urine) .

You need to do two things. First is to change the medication for diabetes instantly and go for other classes because for this class is just a stupid and useless way of increasing troubles like UTI in your case. Next get your urine routine examination and culture and sensitivity of the organism responsible for UTI and get a combination antibiotic for the treatment of it. At our setup in subcontinent, due to resistance of the organism we prefer combination of fosfomycin and nitrofurantoin for the UTI which is mostly resilient E coli.

Talk to your diabetologist and ask them to change your medication and treat your UTI with the help of them prescribing you with antibiotic suited for you.

I hope it helps. Take good care of yourself and don't forget to close the discussion please.

Regards
Khan
