What Causes UTI After Taking A Course Of Antibiotics?

default
Posted on Wed, 8 Apr 2015
Question: I've had three oral surgeries followed by antibiotics. Five days after the course of antibiotics I have
gotten a UTI. This has occurred three months in a row. I am scheduled for another extraction and bone implant and crown lengthening. What could be a course of action to prevent another UTI?

Brief Answer:
UTI can not be due to antibiotics.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for your query, based on the facts that you have posted it appears that you have UTI following oral surgeries and taking antibiotics .You have a doubt this UTI to be due to antibiotics.

At the outset let me state that we prescribe antibiotics to kill the bacteria and to control the infection .So any antibiotic for that matter can not be a reason for getting UTI. It is likely to be coincidence you got UTI after taking antibiotics after oral surgery.

The most probable cause of UTI may be due to Post Menopausal Urethral Stenosis which is very common in females after menopause.

After the age of menopause there is generalized atrophy of all Genito Urinary Organs which also involves urethral passage causing narrowing of the urethral passage (Urethral Stenosis).Because of the urethral Stenosis there is incomplete emptying of the bladder during urination and some amount of urine always remains in the bladder what is called as residual urine .This stagnated residual urine is a source of infection causing UTI.

Since your urine culture has revealed bacteria to be sensitive only to Nitrofurantoin It is always safe to take small dosage of Nitrofurantoin twice daily as a prophylaxis so as to prevent getting repeated episodes of UTI.

I would suggest you to consult qualified Urologist for clinical assessment and get endoscopic examination of bladder (Cystoscopy) and Urethral Calibration done .
This will dilate your urethral passage and help in complete emptying of bladder and there by prevent getting UTI repeatedly.

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions
I shall be happy to help you
Thanks and Regards.

Thank you for your prompt response.

I have had a cystoscope of the bladder which was negative for cancer or
any blockage.

I was diagnosed with interstitial cystitis and given a six month prescription for
Nitroflurition Mono Mac.
I did not have an infection for 18 months. Then the abcess tooth, cyst, and
Oral surgeries. I have gone to a Uro-gynecologist. I have also gotten
instillations to calm the bladder. But never have I had three UTIs each month.
And it does seem coincidental. How could the urine all of a sudden
start remaining in the bladder.
How long can you be on Nitroflurition? What does the urethral calibration involve?
thank you,

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for follow up.

Urethral stenosis is not a complete blockage but narrowing of the passage and it is a progressive condition and one has to do self urethra dilatation at home every day ..
One can take Nitrofurantoin in small doses as a prophylaxis for six months intermittently with a gap of month.

Urethral Calibration is dilatation of urethra upto 35 french size and then patient has to do self dilatation at home once daily so as to prevent it from getting stenosed again.

In majority of cases this helps to resolve the issue .

You can discuss this with your Urologist .
Thanks and Regards.
