What Causes UTI Symptoms Even After Ciprofloxacin Intake?

Question: Hey doc, I suffered from what I believe was a UTI last summer although a culture and STD test both came back negative and i was prescribed a 14 day dose of ciprofluoxacin 500mg twice daily. That seemed to clear things up. 1 year later I got the same symptoms and went to the clinic to have a test done. Initial urine analysis revealed leukocytes in my urine but the lab was closed for a culture to be done so I was prescribed a course of cipro once again. I felt fine during my cipro treatment but on day 10 my symptoms fully reappeared... I went back to the clinic on day 13 of cipro to ask to be retested because I felt maybe I wasn't taking the right antibiotic or maybe a resistance had developed. They sent me for an STD test to rule out gono and chlamydia and both came back negative. my culture also revealed no more bacteria in my urine. My question is, could the fact that I was still on my cipro treatment have ruined my test results?? I'm still feeling symptoms and discomfort and I find myself taking advils to numb the pain. Do symptoms from bladder infections linger for days - weeks even after the infection is gone?? Please help, I am worried and I want to know if ciprofluoxacin could mess up urine culture tests and std tests

Brief Answer:
Yes , antibiotics can mess up the results.

Detailed Answer:
Yes , antibiotics can mess up the results.

In cases of chronic cystitis(long term urinary bladder infection) or prostatitis , one get symptoms even though infection has cleared off , because of residual inflammation and hypersensitivity urinary tract surface.

Ideal steps would be to get ultrasound done to have look at bladder and your kidneys.Secondly repeat urine tests after a week or so.Prior to that see a urologist (if you haven't seen one.).Then depending on test results treatment can be suggested.

Also instead of advil ask doctor for urinary tract specific analgesics/anti inflammatory.(Prescription medications).

Drink lots of water and fruit/berry juices.

Hope this helps. Please ask if there are doubts.Regards.
