What Causes A Dark Purple Circular Bruise On The Upper Arm?

default
Posted on Mon, 21 Nov 2016
Question: Good afternoon. I have a dark purple circular bruise on the inside of my upper arm measuring about 1" in diameter. I have had a few of these appear during the past year or so and they are not the result of contact with anything. They begin to "heal" quickly beginning with a yellow circle around the circumference of the circle. Also during the past 18 months I have had a number (approximately 10) of smaller round spots occur usually on the inside of my forearm measuring 3/8" or 1/2"--these appear to be red and not purple and disappear within 3-4 days. Neither of them are painful or scaly. What could this be and what should I do?

Brief Answer:
Senile purpura that can be treated easily.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to Health Care magic, I am Dr , Muhammad Ahmad , I have read your question closely, I understand your concern and will be helping you with your health related problem.

These bruises you are talking about are called purpurae (plural of purpura). If you never had history of such issues since your 40s and 50s then most probably this is senile purpura you are having, this means that with the passage of age , blood vessels of your skin keep getting weaker and weaker and eventually they start to break up with very minor touches and blood oozes out of them into the surrounding skin.

This usually happens around and after the age of 70 but might happen earlier depending upon life style, occupation and general health of the person.
Other cause of having a purpura can be blood thinners , if you are using any medication for blood thinning like aspirin specially, it can thin up your blood so much that it oozes out in skin forming bruise.

What you can do is that you should focus on using vitamins more, the best source is food obviously, citrus fruits are very very good for you as they have vitamin C which is essential to strengthen skin and vessels, vitamin E is needed too, to save you from oxidative injury, you can use an OTC multivitamin like Centrum to get essential vitamins and minerals.
If you are using blood thinners then notify your doctor about bruises. In your next visit to doctor do discuss these bruises with him he might like to get some specific tests done like platelet concentration, Bleeding time, clotting profile, scratch test, to see what might be wrong.
It is not an emergent situation though I would suggest you not to panic and start using vitamins helpful to strengthen your skin.

I hope this answered your question, If you have more queries I am happy to answer you.
Regards.
