What Causes A Knot In Lower Left Side?

default
Posted on Wed, 30 Jul 2014
Question: Once I have been in bed for about two hours I get a knot in my lower left side that I am convinced is gas. I have been to the doctor and tried different things but this problem has gotten me up every night for the last 4 years. It seems to be getting worse - more belching as well as gas. I am really writing this for my husband. He has tried different medicine but nothing seems to help.

Brief Answer:
Colonoscopy is necessary.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Lower left side is where sigmoid colon is located. As you are over the age of 50, any problem in large intestine is more probable. Usually pain/bloating in the lower left side area is caused by diverticulitis (inflammation of small pouches in the intestinal wall). However such gas feeling can be also a symptom of bowels obstruction due to colon cancer.
That is why I suggest you to do not ignore your symptoms and do not wait with it any longer. You need proper diagnostics.
You should start with blood work, CRP level and abdominal ultrasound. If no signs of inflammation, colonoscopy should be done.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
