What Causes A Small Wheatish Patch Behind Neck?

default
Posted on Fri, 5 Jun 2015
Question: Today I see a small wheatish patch in the back neck of my 2.3 years old daughter. I am really scared if it is a symptom of Vitiligo. Though it is not completely white but somewhat skin is clearer than nearby skin. She is not under any medication and a healthy kid otherwise. I really wish it can be cured as soon as possible. Till yesterday it was not there, daily I make her bath and today only I saw that. In case you may ask these questions, would like to answer in advance that in our family no one has Vitiligo, our immune systems are good, my daughter never had any issues with her skin, her skin is not sensitive in general or with sun rays. She is just 2.3 years old so no point of any mental anxiety or stress. We use dettol soap to bath her and apply Johnsons baby skin lotion from past 2 years. Her skin complexion is wheatish. There is no incident of any injury either. Please respond. Can it be something else in place of Vitiligo? Like skin infection or skin allergy? I am a bit worried as she is very small and never had any major issues. I am attaching her picture.

Brief Answer:
previtiligo and nevus dyschromicus are possibilities

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Welcome to HCM.
I have read your query.
I have seen the attached photographs also.
I understand your concern.
As per details, there are following possibilities for the symptoms you mentioned-
1) Pre vitiligo : it is the stage preceeding vitiligo. It is characterised by hypopigmented skin which is totally asymptomatic. It has spontaneous onset and is progressive in nature. It may be noticed anytime when the hypopigmentation becomes appreciable to visualize.
2) Nevus dyschromicus: it is actually a birth mark but present since birth. As you mentioned that you never noticed it before so the chances of being it to be nevus are highly unlikely.
Vitiligo usually has genetic predisposition but family history is not always found.
Treatment of choice is topical sreroids . Other modalities of treatment include tacrolimus, decapeptide growth factors, phototherapy.
You should visit your doctor so that he can do clinical examination of the skin. Wood's lamp examination is helpful in making diagnosis.
You can share my opinion with him.
I hope it helps.
Stay healthy.
