What Causes Abdominal Bloating And Floating Stools After Taking Amoxicillin And Clavulanate?
Question: My under control SIBO was thrown off track by amoxicillin- clavunate. Bloating, pain, growling, stuffiness nasty pale, floaty malabsorption BMs. I tried a couple of courses of Xifaxam, instead of the Flagyl/Cipro I usually take. The last caused severe burning in my colon and blood on the toilet paper. Went to ER, hold it was probably hemmeroids. I had tested negative for c. Diff when I was on Xifaxan - I know now that was a mistake, as it would be negative due to antibiotic even I had it -- no fever, no signs of infection in blood work or urine. ER doctor gave me 14 days of Cipro and Flagyl, 500MG. I have taken 7 days worth, and am worse, woke up last night with watery diarrhea and severe pain. Can't see my regular doctor until Wednesday. Should I stop one or both of these antibiotics?
Brief Answer:
Following answer to your query.
Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you for asking!
I read your query and understood your concerns.
What you are experiencing has began after antibiotic use and has nothing to do with SIBO. Moreover the test for c. difficile is false negative due to antibiotic use.
Your symptoms are typical for candida overgrowth due to antibiotic use. This is why I strongly recommend to stop taking both antibiotics and to do a stool test for candida.
If you were my patient I would recommend the following measures to relieve your symptoms:
- use probiotics
- drink plenty of water
- use tasectan
- use Nystatin
Hope this was of help!
Wish you health!
