Question: I have been taking microgestin for two months without the inactive pills. My partner and I have a regularly sex life. During sex I started bleeding moderately and it lasted a few days. I was still taking my pills regularly. We continued with our regular sexual activity. I a few days later started to have abdominal cramping, increased fatigue, my breast are sore and have grown a whole cup size and I am bloating. A week went by same symptoms with a few spells of vomiting then loss of appetite. I have taken several pregnancy test and all have been negative. My skin is glowing, I am getting round, breast are noticeable plump. Please, help me figure out what is going on. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
May be a side effect of pill.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing to us about it.

I can understand your concern.

As you are taking microgestin oral pills regularly from last 2 months the chances of pregnancy are very rare and your pregnancy test results are too negative.

Your symptoms can be a side effect of pills because the pills contain hormone estrogen and progesterone in it and these side effects can be due to hormonal imbalance.

These side effects may get settled in 2-3 month period.

One more significant thing: you stated that you had bleeding after sexual intercourse. May I ask it occurs every time after sexual contact?

Please revert back to me with my answer.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Good luck.

No, it doesn't occur every time. It occurred during intercourse and it was not spotting there was small puddle in the bed and blood all over my partner. The bleeding continued for a fews. I started the microgestin the same day my mirena IUD was removed. We continued our sexual activity as usual. I took another test this evening, but it took the entire ten minutes for a faint positive line to appear. Should I wait a few days and test again to be sure?

Brief Answer:
Faint positive line may be due to evaporation line.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Sorry for my delay in response.

I need to know the details about your periods when mirena iud was inserted.

Bleeding after sex can be due to breakthrough bleeding (a side effect of the pill) cause by pill. It can settle after 2-3 cycles.

If a faint positive line appears after 10 minutes it can be due to evaporation line (false positive result).

In my opinion you should proceed for a Blood beta HCG test to rule out pregnancy (more confirmatory test).

Hope it is useful, feel free to ask more questions.

Do accept my response if no further query.

Good luck.
Regards
Dr.Richa
