What Causes Abdominal Cramps During Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Tue, 26 May 2015
Question: 23 weeks pregnant. Have gone to doctors twice now with horrible menstrual like cramps in lower pelvis that lasted over an hour were not relieved by drinking water, emptying bladder and lying on left side. Bith times occured upon waking in the morning so no activity at all beforehand. Both times everything was fine- cervix long and closed, normal amniotic fluid, no leaking fluid. When i ask what to do if it happens again they are vague. Says its not normal to cramp for so long. Any suggestions? Im 38 and had a hematoma first trimester that resolved at 12 weeks and vanishing twin at 10 weeks but all has been great besides this awful cramping.

Brief Answer:
Do one usg scan if cramp is persistent.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

Mild to moderate abdominal cramp is quite common and seen throughout the pregnancy period. It occurs mostly due to irregular uterine contraction.

I suggest you to undergo one pelvic ultrasound scan (if NOT done recently and have persistent abdominal cramp) to know the status of Previous Cyst and other underlying pathology (if any).

Anti-spasmodic medication (like Drotaverine) or uterine relaxant may help to reduce abdominal cramp. Take complete prescription from your doctor.

Hope, it helps for your information. Kindly, close the discussion if you don't have any other query.

Wish your good health and successful motherhood.

Regards,
Dr S Patra
